I sometimes wonder what would have happened if Kevin and I didn’t decide to get married in the Comox Valley. We picked the location on the basis that it was a midway travel point for almost everyone who would be attending our wedding. We could have done it in Powell River where we lived, in Victoria where we met, in Nanaimo where Kevin grew up, or in Langley where I grew up, but nope! I always feel that everything happens for a reason, and I know now why we stuck to our guns and chose Mount Washington.
Quite simply, I had to meet Karen.
For my wedding there was only two things that really mattered to me (besides the whole marrying thing). My dress, and my photographer. When I started searching for someone to capture the special moments for my day, the first page I came across was Karen’s of McKinnon Photography and that was that. She was going to photograph my wedding on November 26th up a snowy mountain, or I wasn’t going to get married. Thankfully she was willing, and photographed our wedding for us. When I was pregnant, just naturally she photographed my maternity photographs, and our daughter Avari at 6 weeks old.
Over the last 5 years, our relationship has gone from business, to assisting/mentoring, to a great friendship. I’ve attended almost 40 weddings with Karen over three wedding seasons, and I know for a fact that I would not be where I was today if we didn’t meet. She is all about the concept of a today present, but she gave me and nurtured a life gift.
So what is this all about? Well, even though I don’t get to spend every weekend anymore hanging out with her family and hauling around a ginormous bag for 12 hours at a time, I still insist that I get to head over in the summer at least a handful of times to work. Because really, you can never stop growing. (and sometimes when I’m really lucky, she’ll be cleaning out her closet
).
Last weekend was one of those weekends, and we headed off on an adventure to Strathcona Wilderness Lodge for Justine and Phil’s wedding.
